World War I is the fourth epoch available to the player in Empires: Dawn of the Modern World. This is the epoch in which all civilizations are updated to their modern counterparts.

Overview[]

Although the real World War I only took place during four years in the 1910s, in the game the World War I age spans over two decades. The onset of World War I is the most dramatic change between any two ages, with all units updated and older civilizations replaced by their modern equivalents. Towers and walls appear more modern, and infantry and siege weapons are completely transformed. Many units such as cavalry, temples, and traditional infantry and warships suddenly become obsolete, and the introduction of tanks and aircraft changes the strategy of the game. World War I is also a natural place to begin a game for the later five civilizations.

History[]

Warfare underwent a major change between the late 19th Century and the end of World War I. It was hoped that modern weaponry, from machine guns to tanks, bombers and submarines, would help achieve a swift, decisive victory. However, World War I deteriorated into a bloody battle of attrition. In 1917, the U.S. joined the Allies—dramatically changing the tides of war.[1]
