Briefing[]
The Hundred Years' War Begins: 1340-1346
King Edward looked gravely at his royal councilors. He shook his head, knowing they had not the slightest idea of the danger they faced - that all England faced.
"Gentlemen," the King began, "our fight against the French does not progress well. If the situation is not remedied, the crown may be in jeopardy."
"Your Highness," said a young adviser, rising cautiously to his feet, "with all respect, only minor skirmishes have been fought thus far, how can one say..."
Edward glared at the man, silencing him instantly. "If you can hold your tongue, I shall endeavor to explain." The advisor quickly seated himself and Edward continued. "The French have a larger navy, a formidable army, and an abundance of resources. Moreover, they are pushing to control the Channel, which you all know", he said looking again at the impulsive councilor, "is the only route to Normandy. Should their stratagem succeed, my son shall have no way to carry the fight back to French soil". The King paused and drew a heavy sigh. "There is, however, one chance. We must destroy the French army before it is too late!"
Objectives[]
- Defeat the French navy at Sluis.
- Use your Demolition Ship to destroy the French Flagship in order to confuse and weaken the powerful French navy.
- Destroy the 4 buildings at the center of Caen. Edward, The Black Prince, must survive.
- Using the citizens that will be sent from England, gather 150 Stone from the rubble of Caen, so that it can be shipped back to England.
- Build up your forces so that you may attack Calais and destroy its Town Center.
History[]
In the year of 1337, King Philip VI of France invaded and conquered the duchy of Aquitaine. Since the days of William the Conqueror, England controlled much of north-western France, so the English viewed the invasion as a clear threat to their safety. As well, King Edward, who had a claim to the French throne, chose this time to begin a war between England and France to further his own ends. The ensuing battles where the opening stages of a war that became known as the Hundred Years War (even though the war lasted more than 100 years, and fighting took place only intermittingly). The first years of the war were marked by short skirmishes, with no major battles until the English won a great naval victory at Sluis in 1340. This opened the way to France herself.
Hints[]
- Attack with your navy and, as the battle is going on, sneak through the fray with your Demolition Ship to destroy the French Flagship.
- You will need to use some quick maneuvering if you hope to steer the Demolition Ship through the enemy fleet to destroy the Flagship.
- You don't need to destroy everything in Caen -- just the center. You might find it to your advantage to leave the rest intact.
- When you gain the ability to train units and construct buildings, you will need to get your economy up and running as quickly as possible.
- Be sure not to neglect your defenses while you are building up your forces.
