Technological researches give an advantage to civilizations who choose to research them over other civilizations who do not. Each epoch of history has its own set of technologies associated with it, which are still available if the subsequent epochs if the player chooses not to research them in. Doing research takes time and costs resources, but the potential benefits are worth the price.
Technologies can only be researched at specific buildings, such as the Capitol , Hospital , Granary , University and Temple . Each building focuses on selected aspects of the game. For example, to increase the repair rate of Docks and Naval Yards, the player must research the Cofferdam, Dry Dock, and Scuba Repairs Technologies, which can be researched in different Epochs at the University. Researching technologies can be queued up in the same way as training units.
Advancing to the next epoch is a special type of research that becomes available only after your civilization fulfills the requirements. Epoch researches take much longer than others, and if in queue, take priority over whatever else in the queue and begins research once the current training or research is complete.
If a player begins a game in any epoch other than the first, all technologies of the previous epochs will have been automatically researched unless specifically disabled in the Scenario Editor 's Technology Tree menu.
