Description[]

Rome's Pharaoh is the sixth and final scenario of the Roman Campaign in Empire Earth: The Art of Conquest.

Briefing[]

Rome's Pharaoh

Although Pompey had been defeated, Caesar knew that while he still lived, he would remain a threat to the new dictator's power in Rome. So, Caesar quickly embarked as many troops as possible and sailed off in pursuit of his enemy in Egypt. Disembarking at Alexandrina, Caesar found a city in turmoil. The people were starving and close to rioting. Two ruling factions, Ptolemy and his sister Cleopatra, were locked in a bitter dispute over rightful rule in Egypt. Cleopatra controlled the city itself, while Ptolemy held sway over much of the countryside. Caesar and his legions were about to find themselves in the middle of a civil war. Forming up his men, Caesar decided to immediately march on the Royal Palace and seize both rulers and force them to surrender Pompey. Only then would he look to the issue of helping to solve Egypt's troubles.

Objectives[]

° Force Cleopatra or Ptolemy to surrender Pompey.

° Caesar must survive.

° Select the envoy of whose side you will oppose, the tigers will make that decision final.

° Protect Cleopatra's 2 town centers and capitol until you get enough reinforcements to capture Ptolemy's bases.

° Reinforcements will arrive by sea regularly. Direct the transports to land at either of the two landing areas bordered by red flags.

° Protect the largest of the Great Pyramids. If it loses more than half its original hit points, the raid will succeed and you will lose.

History[]

Ptolemy XII, father of Cleopatra and Ptolemy, had been paying tribute to Rome in exchange for Roman non-interference in Egypt. When he died, Cleopatra and Ptolemy married each other, as was the custom, and joint rule was declared. It can be surmised that neither was very happy with this arrangement, since Ptolemy, now Ptolemy XIII, somehow "accidentally" drowned and Cleopatra married her younger brother (Ptolemy XIV, of course). Perhaps she thought the younger brother would be easier to control, but apparently the young man's ambition matched her own. Soon the two rulers were deeply involved in a factious squabble for sole rule of Egypt.

When Pompey arrived he expected to find an Egyptian eager to re-establish ties with Rome and to support the Republic's struggle against the tyrant, Caesar. Unfortunately for him, both Ptolemy and Cleopatra saw instead an opportunity to gain the upper hand against the other. They were more interested in restoring the stability of their country rather than in listening to Pompey's plea for aiding the constitutional government of his homeland. In short, they saw a refugee who powerless to face his pursuer, who was in no doubt already on his way to Egypt. Interested in gaining the aid of Caesar's victorious armies, Ptolemy seized and executed Pompey before Cleopatra could arrange it and planned to present his head to Julius when he arrived.

When Rome's new dictator disembarked at Alexandrina, he found not only the head of his enemy, but also a perfect opportunity to secure the vassal-state alliance of one of the richest nations of the age. Little is known for a fact why he chose to support Cleopatra over her brother, but perhaps it was the combination of his military strength her personal magnetism that convinced him Egypt would stay close to him with her as ruler. After successfully defeating and executing Ptolemy, Caesar embarked again to finish off the remaining supporters of Pompey and the Old Republic. In fact, even though he was officially recognized in Rome as "Dictator for Life," he spent much of his time after Pompey's death hunting down and destroying Republican armies. Just three years after Pompey's defeat, members of the Senate assassinated Caesar in Rome. Although it was in the name of restoring the Republic, it is ironic that this act brought only one more civil war and, eventually, the empire.

Hints[]

~Each town center, as well as the outside base and capitol, that is captured reduces Cleopatra's ability to reinforce.

~Each base of Ptolemy's that is destroyed reduces his ability to reinforce. Each base is considered destroyed when all buildings in that area are destroyed. (Except walls)

~You will get reinforcements in the form of transports on a regular basis. You must sail them to one of two landing areas (marked with red flags) to receive their troops.

~Make full use of Caesar's morale bonus. Remember that it applies to allied troops as well as your own.

~Capturing/recapturing one of Alexandrina's town centers or its capitol gives that player an immediate reinforcement.

~If Caesar's forces capture/recapture a town center or the capitol, whoever is his ally will get the reinforcements.

~Alexandrina's buildings are considered neutral for the duration of the conflict, so be sure to utilize the healing radius of its hospitals.

~At some point you will be able to construct siege weapons. Your only source of wood and gold supplies will come from your reinforcement transports, so be sure to protect any siege units you decide to build.
