Restoring the Republic is the second scenario of the Roman Campaign in Empire Earth: The Art of Conquest.

Briefing[]

Restoring the Republic

And so it was that after his successes against the German tribes, Marius returned to Rome and was showered with rose petals and well wishes from the citizens of Rome. In the following years Marius would rise to the Consulship again and again, but the life of a peaceful administrator did not come easily to the great battle leader, as his skills on the battlefield far outweighed his skills in politics and law giving. Marius was quickly becoming a forgotten man, while his one time lieutenant, Sulla, was proving him self to be a talented general and ambitious competitor in Roman politics. Marius then took it upon himself to travel to Asia Minor and there attempt to confront Mithridates, king of Pontus, a growing power in the region. Perhaps Gaius Marius was desperate to once again prove his worth on the battlefield, for he insulted and bullied Mithridates, who played an excellent host to the visiting Roman dignitaries, and eventually returned to Rome with nothing but loss of a prestige. Sulla, however, found incredible fame and popularity as he helped Rome put down uprisings in Italia and eventually was made a Consul and asked to lead Rome's legions against Mithridates, who was becoming more and more hostile to Rome. Although at first it seemed Marius would disappear from public service, but the Senate changed its mind and overturned Sulla's appointment and instead asked Marius to lead Rome against Mithridates.

Sulla quickly joined with his legions and found all his troops would support him if he defied Rome. Most of his troops were from the poor and slave classes, and owed whatever they had, or what they had, to their leaders success. Sulla immediately marched on Rome and took the city by surprise. Marius, the only man anyone could potentially look to for resistance to such audacity, was outlawed from Rome, and his political supporters were speedily executed and replaced with Sulla's own partisan politicians. Marius fled the city and took ship for Carthage, where he hoped to hide until he could make new plans. Many of Marius' former soldiers, veterans of the Jugurthine Wars, lived in Carthage and upon hearing of Marius's plight, took it upon themselves to aid and protect their patron and hero. Upon hearing the news of Sulla marching to Asia Minor, Marius knew the time was right to plot revenge...

History[]

In years following his successful campaigns against the Teutons and the Cimbri, Marius won six consecutive consulships to Rome. The years of peace tested the limited administrative talents of the general and led to his eventual fall from grace. Soon, the Social War, a conflict between the disenfranchised Italian tribes and Rome over the right to citizenship in the Republic, brought a new opportunity for fame and honor for Marius. Although he commanded well on the northern front, most of the accolades went to his former lieutenant, Sulla, on the southern front. Although Rome won the Social War, they decided to grant citizenship to all Italians, thus providing a huge pool of men eligible for conscription.

Sulla's fame catapulted him to the consulship and soon he was assembling an army to face Mithridates, a king in Asia Minor whose power and influence was causing some concern in Rome. There were still powerful politics at play in Rome, however, and he quickly sought out his officers and asked if they would support his crusade against the Senate that had thwarted him. His army, almost entirely conscripted, owed everything they had, or would ever have, to him, so they immediately accepted.

Sulla's move was so quick and so shocking that little meaningful resistance was given. Rome fell to Sulla after a few hours of street fighting. Marius was not ready to retire from public service, especially while his one-time lieutenant was in dictatorial control of Rome, so he fled the city to seek allies to help him restore the Republic. Sulla seemed unaware of the threat posed by his former commander and he immediately began his campaign in Greece and Asia Minor against Mithridates.

Hints[]

~Use conscription to gain soldiers.

~Resources are at a premium. Accomplish some of the minor tasks in the mission to gain gold and other resources to help fund your conscription efforts.

~Avoid frontal attacks if possible. You will find it difficult to replace your losses.

~Sulla's senators have the capacity to recruit troops from the countryside if they successfully escape Rome when you capture it.

~When you are ready to go to Italy, be sure to land only at the landing zone Marius reveals to you. Landing anywhere else on the peninsula would lead to instant defeat and disclosure.

~Try to anticipate the escape routes of Sulla's senators to make it easier to catch them.

~The island of Sardinia is located almost on a direct line between Carthage and the revealed landing area.

~The Scorpion is a versatile siege weapon that does equal amounts of damage to units and buildings alike, but with a reduced 'splash' effect. Build this at the siege factory in Etruria to help breach Rome's defenses.

Storyline[]

88 B.C., Roman Carthage, North Africa. Gaius Marius plots vengeance upon his enemies in Rome...

Gaius Marius: A curse on the house of Sulla! I shall make him pay for his betrayal! Rome will not tolerate a dictator!

Soldier: Marius? Is that you? Praise the gods. You're alive! When we heard about the latest events in Rome, we feared Sulla had imprisoned you, or worse. What do you plan to do now? Whatever it is, count on our aid. Perhaps we should ask the Carthaginians for our support?

Gaius Marius goes to speak with the Carthaginians.

Gaius Marius: Hail noble Carthaginians! I am Marius, former consul of Rome. I come to you in need of your support. The Republic is at the mercy of a dictator and I am asking any assistance you can give to help me rid her of that treacherous snake, Sulla.

Carthaginian: We know who you are Marius; do you think we had forgotten who it was who conquered the Jugurthians not so very long ago? We sympathize with your plight, but we have little to offer in support. However, if you would help us deal with a resurgent Jugurthian tribe's raids on our overland trade routes, we could convince the local merchants to donate ships and supplies to your cause.

Gaius Marius: Very well. We shall dispose of these bandits for you. Where have they been seen last?

Carthaginian: Between the hills to the southwest, although their actual camp is suspected to be further down along the road.

Gaius Marius and his army head out to fight the Jugurthians.

The Jugurthians are defeated.

All the Jugurthians in the area have been defeated. Return to Carthage to receive the Merchants' thanks.

Gaius Marius and his army arrive back into Carthage.

Carthaginian Merchant: Thank you, Marius. Here is a ship and some supplies. We've also been hearing rumors of a mad man on the isle of Sardinia who is supposedly guarding a huge treasure. Probably nothing, but you might want to check it out.

Gaius Marius: Excellent. I know of a landing area far enough away from Rome to keep us unnoticed, but close enough to Etruria so we can quickly enlist aid there. I fear landing anywhere else on the peninsula will only result in our immediate capture. As for Sardinia, it might be worth investigating.

Gaius Marius and his army arrive in Sardinia via transport ships, only to be attacked by the Sardinians, led by Carales the Mad.

Carales the Mad: AHA! Come for my treasure, have you? Well, let's see your mettle, eh?

The attack is made, until Carales the Mad ultimately surrenders.

Carales the Mad: Enough, enough! I submit to you! You are powerful indeed. My island and its peoples are yours to do with as you please. I beg of you to show mercy. We raised arms against you simply because Rome's recent troubles have left us unsure of who to trust.

Gaius Marius: Then be satisfied that we are Romans you can trust. My name is Gaius Marius and I mean to take Rome away from Sulla's filthy lackeys and restore the Republic.

Carales the Mad: In that case... I've something to show you.

Carales the Mad heads into the island barracks.

Carales the Mad: One more thing, Marius; you'll need some help getting past Rome's naval patrols. I have a... ahem, business associate who can arrange to distract the Roman warships around your chosen landing area. In exchange, he asks only that you secure the shipbuilding facility Sulla's men had unfairly taken from him in Sicily.

Gaius Marius and his men find the captured shipworks, and destroy the tower guarding it.

The shipworks have been returned to their rightful owners. The naval patrol should now be distracted.

Gaius Marius and his men defeat an Etrurian patrol.

Gaius Marius: This was an Etrurian patrol. They are more hostile than I had anticipated. We must find a way to sneak into the town down the road to the east and capture the governor. No doubt he is hiding within the town center.

Etruria is captured.

Etruian Governor: Oh, Marius! What a ... umm... er... unexpected surprise! I wish I had known when you were coming; I would have prepared a feast! Umm... care for a drink?

Gaius Marius: No, governor, but I will take your town and your soldiers. You will open your armory and allow me to equip any and all able-bodied men for my campaign to reclaim the Republic. As long as you faithfully aid me, I'm sure I won't have to ask you to lead one of my assault cohorts yourself.

Etruian Governor: Oh... er... oh dear. Yes! Of course, you have my most fervent loyalty. You will find many brave men in the slave district at the north end of the city.

Gaius Marius arrives in the slave district.

Gaius Marius: I offer any man here a promise of land and a steady income if they take up arms with me now and help free Rome from tyranny! Form up in front of me to claim your new weapons and armor - your chance at a new life. If you choose to ignore me, then may you sit in your hovels and rot!

Gaius Marius returns to the town center.

Gaius Marius: Good. Now we must surround Rome and cut it off from the rest of the peninsula. I think the city will rise up and help me expel Sulla's troops if I can get to the capitol. We must keep the senators still loyal to Sula from escaping. If they manage to get to the countryside, they may be able to raise more troops to fight us. The port town of Ostia just outside Rome will probably be one of their escape route, so we should destroy the docks there before we begin our assault.

An attack is made on Sulla's army in Ostia.

Sulla's senators are attempting to flee Rome! You must stop them!

Sulla's senators are slain.

Rome has been recaptured and Sulla's dictatorship is ended. Marius cannot rest easy, however. His former lieutenant still has a formidable force in the east, and once he hears of Marius' actions, Sulla will no doubt return to Italy as soon as he can. But Marius is aging, he uncertain how much longer he can carry the burden of fighting for Rome. Perhaps soon it will be time for another man to guide the Republic.

Walkthrough[]

Briefing: This is a nearly pure commando mission without (much) control over a base. Fairly easy.

Carthage: We start with 8 Roman Legionnaires, 4 Pilums, and 2 Cataphracts, and without any resources. We lead the army into the west and advance slowly to vanquish the bandits without losses. Further west is their tiny camp. Back in Carthage we receive 2 War Elephants, 2 Transports, 300 food, 250 gold and 300 iron.

Sardinia: We follow the hint of our Carthaginian contact and land on the isle. Pause with F3 and move the War Elephants to the front. We are attacked by Warrior Hero Carales and his few troops. Since all of them will join us when we have Carales at 50% of his health, concentrate all attacks on him and use the pilum attack of all your Legionnaires on him. We receive Carales, 3 Phalanx, 2 Bowmen, 8 Citizens, a Town Center, an iron field (1,000 units), 2 Farms (1,000 food each), enough trees for 8,500 wood and a treasure chest (1,000 gold when you click on it). Set the Citizens to farm food, mine iron and chop wood. Upgrade your transports and iron units fully and train two more Legionnaires.

  • Legionnaires: 2x attack, 2x shock armor, 2x arrow armor, 1x hitpoints
  • Phalanx: 2x attack, 2x shock armor, 2x pierce armor, 1x hitpoints

Use all your gold to partially upgrade your gold units:

  • Pilums: 2x attack, 2x range, 1x hitpoints
  • Cataphracts: 2x attack, later 1x hitpoints
  • War Elephants: 2x shock armor, later 2x attack, 2x hitpoints
  • Bowmen: no upgrades, it is not worth it, we have only two of them

Sicily: Follow Carales' hint and sail eastwards to Sicily to conquer the Roman Docks. It is guarded by 4 Legionnaires, 2 Pilums and a Tower. Land your heroes, Cataphracts, War Elephants, Legionnaires and Pilums at the westernmost coast of Sicily, lure the guards to you and then destroy the Tower. Transport your Citizens there to mine the gold (1,000 units). When you are done with gathering food, iron, wood and gold, conscript the 8 Citizens and sail with full transporters northwards to Gaule.

Corsica: This island north of Sardinia is useless and even dangerous (our units could be infected with pestilence), so we do not land there.

Etruria: Land in southern Gaule and defeat the coast guard. Let the transports bring the rest of your units. Advance eastwards with the heroes, Cataphracts and War Elephants. Since the city and its army will be ours once Marius arrives at the Town Center, we do not fight but move all units there. We gain control over the city and receive 250 gold, 6 Legionnaires, 6 Pilums, 2 Scorpions and 15 Citizens, which we immediately conscript (total conscription cost of the scenario: 575 gold). We have a Siege Workshop and train a Catapult. Upgrade your units to your liking; especially useful is the range of your siege weapons – and see that your Cataphracts and War Elephants are robust. When you spent all your gold, spend the remaining food and iron to produce more Legionnaires in Sicily; around 20 should be possible. When they arrive in Etruria, start the attack on Rome.

Rome: Destroy the Dock with your siege weapons, guarding them against the regular attacks from Sulla's troops. Send Carales out for reconnaissance. Rome hast three gates: in the northwest, the east and the south. Eliminate the gate guards by luring them or using the Catapult. Destroy the northwest gate and advance to it, but do not enter the city. Position guards (e.g. 5 Pilums with some infantry each) in front of the other gates to intercept the Senators. Use the Catapult to destroy the Tower from outside the walls. Advance until you can move Marius to the Capitol to win the scenario.
