Description[]
Few fighter planes in history have the glamour and reputation of the North American P-51 "Mustang." Developed in the early part of the war in response to British requests, the Mustang became the USA's signature air superiority and long-range escort fighter in the last two years of World War II. Nearly 15,000 of these powerful and graceful planes took to the skies between 1941-45, serving in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific in a variety of roles. Initially used for reconnaissance and ground-attack, after 1942 new engines gave the Mustang unparalleled high-altitude performance, and opened the way for its glory days as one of the war's premier dogfighters. With up to six .50 calibre machine guns, and 2,000 pounds of bombs or ten 5" rockets, the P-51 was a deadly foe for air or ground enemies.
The signature mission for the Mustang in World War II was long-range bomber escort, a role that the late-model P-51s performed with extreme competence. In Empires, the Mustang has the longest flight time of any fighter. This means the America can keep fighters in the air over enemy targets, or defending friendly bases, longer and more effectively than any other Nation. The P-51's range and flight time is only one half of its value, however. It's also the single best all-round fighter aircraft of its era, markedly superior to anything else in the skies. With excellent abilities against all kinds of targets, air, land, or sea, and its phenomenal range and flight time, the Mustang gives the United States a true aerial trump card, which when combined with the other American air assets can turn the tide of a game. Any opponent who lets the United States build up its air force is likely to find its troops, planes, and cities constantly harassed by a stream of P-51s and other American aircraft.
Sleek, powerful, and modern, the P-51 represented the apex of the US Army Air Force's conventional fighter plane development in World War II. Serving into the Korean War, the Mustang became one of the most successful and famous aircraft in history, and for good reason. As is also true in Empires, the P-51 was capable of any task, any where, at any time, and came to dominate the skies wherever it flew.[1]
