Native Tribes are an optional feature of the skirmish mode in Empire Earth II: The Art of Supremacy. Unlike regular players, the native tribes are always confined to a primitive epoch (the Copper Age), and they do not seek to build a civilisation. Players can ally with them, ignore them or go to war with them.

In order to ally with a tribe, a player must first assimilate them. Assimilation requires having either a Military, Economic, or Imperial leader inside the tribe's territory, and it also requires a player-owned territory that borders the territory of the tribe. Only then can an alliance be proposed. If the alliance proposal is accepted, the tribe will be assimilated. Native tribes embrace the exact same diplomatic alignments as the player they have allied with. Players can change their diplomatic relations with tribes, unless the tribe in question has been assimilated by another player, or rendered berserk. If a native tribe's City Centre is destroyed, it is rendered berserk. A berserk tribe will no longer be open to alliances from any player, and will be focused on defeating the player responsible for destroying their City Centre. The diplomatic status of war will be locked.

Assimilation of native tribes grants powers to the players that assimilate them. These include the following:

  • Faith
  • Fertility
  • Migration
  • Traders
  • Determination - tech point generation rate is increased
  • Warrior Spirit
  • Adobe
  • Scouts - all mobile units have increased line of sight
  • Herbs - buildings with healing capabilities heal units at a faster rate
  • Community - trade drop-off bonus given by houses is increased

If a player's leader (the one used to assimilate the tribe) leaves the assimilated tribe's territory, a secession countdown timer will begin. A seceded tribe can be reassimilated.
