Heart of the Empire is the first scenario of the Coeur de Lion campaign.
Situation[]
October 1182. For 250 years, England has ruled Southern France. Richard the Lionheart is appointed by his father, the ailing King of England, to govern the area in his name. Richard is the second eldest of four brothers. All know that the King does not have long to live.
The King of England is nearing death, and a new French king has ascended the throne: King Philip. Richard's elder brother, the heir to the throne, asks Richard to help him kill their own father to ascend to the throne, ceding Richard Southern France. Richard refuses to accept Prince Henry's proposal. Geoffrey and Richard go to Clairvaux to defend the area from Henry or other barons' attacks.

Defend Clairvaux from Prince Henry or Rebel Baron attack.
Objectives[]
- Travel to Clairvaux - Geoffrey fears Prince Henry or Rebel Barons may attack Clairvaux at any moment. Clairvaux's defenses are in disrepair and must be strengthened immediately.
- Bring Katherine to her Church - Accompany Katherine as she returns to her church in Clairvaux.
- Fortify Clairvaux - Rebuild Clairvaux's fallen walls and tower. Build the walls directly atop the ruined foundations and build the tower atop the cliff south of the walls. This will ensure Clairvaux's safety.
- Mine Stone From the Island Quarry - There is an island south of Clairvaux. Secure a boat to reach the island, and gather what stone you find there.
- Optional: Save Parthenay - Parthenay is under attack! Help defend it!
- Optional: Fortify Parthenay - Bandits are intent on plundering Parthenay. Build in a tower in the village to protect it from the raids. There is not enough stone in the island quarry to fortify both Parthenay and Clairvaux.
- Find the Stone Mason - The stone mason might be able to help you in your quest for stone. He can be found in the empty quarry north of Clairvaux.
- Optional: Protect Parthanay - The main bandit host is attacking Parthenay! Protect the villagers and ensure the tower is not torn down!
- Get Tools From Stone Mason's Home - The stone mason's home has been overrun by ruffians. Drive them from the area and find the mason's tools.
- Mine Ruins for Stone - The ruins in Clairvaux can be scavenged for their stone. Pray it is enough!
- Salvage Stone From the Buildings of Clairvaux - Some of Clairvaux's buildings may be constructed of stone. Salvage the stone you need where ever you can find it.
- Defend Clairvaux - Clairvaux is being attacked! If the city is destroyed, all will be lost! Use the barracks to assemble a defending army!

The player starts with two heroes, Richard and Geoffrey. Going forward will reveal that the bridge to Clairvaux has been destroyed, so the player should go east, where some woodcutters will open a way for Richard. Approaching the town, Richard will be greeted by Sister Katherine, who must be escorted to her church.
The player will take control of 6 Subjects and be given the objective to fortify Clairvaux by constructing walls and a tower. To do this, they must first board a ship and head south to a bandit-infested stone mine. On the way, the town of Parthenay is under attack by bandits. Send Geoffrey and Richard to clear them out. The player is then given the optional objective to build a tower in Parthenay, but there is not enough stone in the mine to fortify both Parthenay and Clairvaux. However, fortifying Parthenay will give the player a Siege Factory and the ability to build Trebuchets.
Using the Trebuchet, the player can destroy a bandit tower to the north, then visit the nearby stone mason. He will tell Richard and Geoffrey that they can mine the stone ruins around, but they must first visit his bandit-infested home to pick up some tools. With the tools in hand, the Subjects can start mining, but there is not enough stone in the ruins to build all the defenses that Clairvaux needs. The player must gather stone from either the church or the fortress. Choosing the fortress will mean losing the Feudal Bonds ability, which allows the player to instantly train all units in the production queue.
When the defenses are up, Clairvaux will be attacked from the southwest. Train some armies and defend the town. At one point, the Count of Clairvaux will betray the town and open the north gate, so send the army up there. Once all the attackers are dead, the player will be victorious.
