The Gunpowder Age is the second epoch available to the player in Empires: Dawn of the Modern World.

Overview[]

The Gunpowder Age is the next age after the Medieval Age, and is arguably the most transitional age in the game. Early riflemen are now thrown into the mix, and with the new units mixed with the old ones, there is a very complicated unit system. Siege weapons become more refined, and units that will be predominant in later ages start to appear. This is the first time units can be updated, and many units are added for every civilization. However, at this point, no units have been removed. Also, all walls and towers have been updated to shoot cannons, as have all battleships.

History[]

In the 14th century, cannons and handheld firearms appeared on battlefields in Europe and Asia. Early gunpowder weapons were costlier and less reliable than bows or swords. However, at sea, their range and power quickly made them indispensable in protecting shorelines and trade routes. An ingenious battleship called a “Turtle Boat,” the first ever iron-clad warship, helped save Korea from a Japanese invasion in the late 16th century.[1]
