Empires: Dawn of the Modern World offers two game types in singleplayer skirmish and multiplayer: Action Mode and Empire Builder.
- Action Mode: The Action mode offers competitive gaming enthusiasts a fast-paced form of gameplay that focuses on rapid combat engagements shortly after the game starts, encouraging many fights throughout a shorter game. In this mode resource gather rates are faster and typically players will progress up the technology tree quicker.
- Empire Builder: This mode of play is designed for gamers who prefer building huge empires on large maps with an unlimited population count providing for large-scale warfare that includes huge armies and sieges. In this mode historical accuracy is essential.
