Carrier Strike is the first scenario of the Pacific Campaign in Empire Earth: The Art of Conquest. It serves as a reenactment of the Battle of Midway.
Briefing[]
From: Commander-in-Chief, United States Pacific Fleet.
To: Commander, Task Force 17.
Subject: Midway
27 MAY 1942
Intelligence has intercepted a Japanese transmission about an impending invasion. The message is vague, and a lot of my officers think it refers to an invasion of the Aleutians. But I think any activity there would be a feint. My gut tells me that the Japanese are going to try and take Midway.
Yamamoto is one shrewd customer. He knows Midway is our westernmost outpost in the Pacific. And without it, there ain't a thing standing between Tokyo and Hawaii. We have reports that a large naval force has already left Japan, which means we have to act now.
I'm sending you out there with everything we got, which unfortunately isn't much. The Hornet, the Enterprise, and some escort ships. Task Force 16 will join you as soon as we get the Yorktown patched up.
Find those enemy carriers, those are the backbone of the Japanese Imperial Navy. Hit 'em fast and hard. Without air support, their invasion plans will fold. You're heavily outnumbered, but you also have the element of surprise. Best of luck out there.
Objectives[]
° Defend Midway and destroy the Japanese attack force. If the enemy troops set foot on Midway, the battle is lost.
° Use all land forces available to you hold out against the incoming air attacks until help arrives.
° Land all the relief forces on Midway.
° Deploy anti-aircraft units to protect the airfield.
° Locate and destroy at least four enemy-carriers. You are outnumbered, so try to avoid engaging the enemy ship-to-ship.
° Defend your carriers and carrier-based planes. If all planes or all carriers are destroyed, the battle is lost. If you do engage in ship-to-ship combat, try to take out enemy cruisers to protect your aircraft.
° Destroy the enemy invasion force before it reaches Midway. Set up a destroyer screen to prevent the invasion force from getting through.
° Deploy ground units to guard the beaches in case any transports slip past the destroyer screen. If enemy troops set foot on Midway, the battle is over!
History[]
After Pearl Harbor, Yamamoto believed that securing Midway would allow Japan to continue is expansionist policies unhindered by the United States. Without these two islands, the US would not have any land base close enough to provide support for their air and naval craft. Japan sent an enormous force of over 160 ships - including 6 aircraft carriers - to capture Midway.
The following combat scenario is a fictionalized re-telling of the Battle of Midway. Some of the details of the events - as well as the order of those events - been altered to preserve gameplay. This should not be taken as a trivialization of the magnitude of this conflict. Rather, this scenario is based on and inspired by the heroics and the sacrifices of the men who fought in that epic battle.
Hints[]
The Japanese Imperial Navy has far greater numbers. Try to avoid engaging the enemy ship-to-ship. Their carrier fleet may be elusive, so your best strategy is to locate and engage them with your air squadrons. Don't let those enemy carriers get away!
It may be necessary to sacrifice ships that have come under attack, letting the enemy engage with them while moving your carriers to safer waters.
It is crucial to intercept the enemy occupation force as quickly as possible in order to stop them before they reach Midway.
Storyline[]
June 4, 1942. The Japanese Imperial Navy flagship Yamamoto leads the fleet through rough weather on a course for Midway.
0400 hours. The weather begins to clear. The order is given to launch all planes.
Midway Atoll. 0600 hours.
Midway's radar picks up approaching signals.
Intelligence Officer: Mayday, mayday! We're under attack! Radar's been knocked out... we're taking heavy casualties... we need assistance immediately---
Transport Captain: Midway ...Midway, do you read, over? Don't know if you can hear us, but hang in there, help is almost there...
The reinforcements arrive.
Intelligence Commander: Task Force 17 is approaching from the Southeast, it's time to locate and sink that enemy carrier group. We better be cautious, intelligence reports indicate that we are heavily outnumbered. Better to engage those carriers with air power than risk a ship-to-ship confrontation.
