For the United Kingdom unit, see C-47 Dakota.

Description[]

The C-47 Skytrain is an American World War II transport plane in Empires: Dawn of the Modern World. It can drop military units by parachute. Unlike other transport planes, the C-47 allows players to drop all types of different land units instead of just paratroopers.

Description[]

One of the most famous of all transport planes of the World War II era was the American C-47, also known as the Dakota. The workhorse of American and British aviation during the 1940s and beyond, the C-47 played dramatic roles in every Allied campaign from North Africa to the fall of Berlin.

Built by the Douglass Aircraft Company, the C-47 was a twin-engined, low-winged monoplane of simple and rugged design. It rapidly became a vital part of the Allied logistical effort during the war, ferrying troops, supplies, mail, and other important cargoes around the world. The preferred aircraft for parachute operations in both American and British service, the C-47 could haul a large load a long distance, and take a good deal of punishment along the way. In Empires, the C-47's capabilities reflect this historical mission. As in a normal airborne operation, the C-47 drops units by parachute, but unlike the usual paratrooper attack, the Dakota can drop a wide assortment of American ground units. These reinforcements will "ride the silk" down to the battlefield. Just as the C-47 spearheaded the airborne assaults on D-Day and during the Arnhem "bridge too far" campaigns, in Empires it also will lead the American assault with its timely combat drops.

Bridging the often-vast distance between factory and battlefield, the C-47 gives the American player a versatile and dramatic way to take the fight to the enemy. Disregarding terrain and obstacles, the mighty Dakota carries the fight to the enemy, dropping a powerful military force where and when the American player desires, and with no way for the enemy to counter the attack. Once on the ground these forces have to fend for themselves, but their appearance where least expected is sure to discomfort even the most prepared foe. That's to be expected from a plane with as storied a history as the C-47, though. From North Africa to Normandy to Holland and into Germany, such heroic transport missions were the Dakota's bread and butter. In Empires, it continues this historic task.[1]
