Description[]

A Conqueror Learns His Trade is the third scenario of the Roman Campaign in Empire Earth: The Art of Conquest.

Briefing[]

A Conqueror Learns His Trade

Soon after Marius' triumphal return return to Rome and the restoration of the Republic, preparations were begun to defend the city from Sulla's inevitable counterstrike. Envoys and legions were sent to confront the treacherous general and attempt to convince his soldiers to swear allegiance to the true Roman army of the Republic. These efforts failed, however, and Sulla made a hasty peace with his enemies in Asia Minor in order to return to Rome to settle accounts. Marius fell ill during this time and died before he was able to finish preparing an adequate defense, leaving behind a weakened and leaderless army to protect an inexperienced and frightened Senate.

Sulla's eventual return was contested but briefly at the gates of Rome and his legions soon secured the capitol and made possible his reinstatement as dictator. Sulla, infuriated by the destruction Marius had wrecked on his estates and followers, demanded that all former associates of Marius be exiled from Italy, or even executed if they would not willingly leave. One such person was a young man named Marius Julius Caesar, an eloquent politician and brilliant soldier. Sulla took exemption to his marriage to the daughter of a close friend of Marius and ordered Caesar to divorce if he wished to stay in Rome. Caesar, already developing the trait of stalwart defiance, refused and instead fled the peninsula in search of an opportunity to make a name for himself and eventually take vengeance upon Sulla.

° Build a capitol in the conquered mainland Mytilene base to-resupply and reinforce your units.

° Do not allow Sulla's allies to destroy the Bithynian Capitol.

° Destroy all barracks, stables, archery ranges and siege factories at the Eastern Legion's fortified city to damage Sulla's prestige. The base can be located almost directly north of Mytilene.

History[]

An ageing and ill Marius did not live long enough to face Sulla's return to Rome, and as a consequence, the Republic was unable to form a cohesive defense against the general. Another brief and bloody battle in the streets of Rome led to Sulla's reinstallation as the de facto dictator. Contrary to what seems like a bloodthirsty desire for absolute power, Sulla actually attempted to end the corrupt politics of the Senate by forcibly reforming the existing constitution. He was, however, terribly merciless towards his enemies, executing as many former friends, associates and allies of Marius as he could find. The young Julius Caesar, by virtue of his marriage to the daughter of one of Marius' closest allies, thus became an enemy of the state under Sulla's regime.

Refusing to divorce his wife and fearful of the headman's axe, Caesar left Italia to join a friend of the family, Minucius Thermus, a praetor in Bithynia. Never content to play it safe, Caesar quickly involved himself in the politics and the struggles of the region. Thermus introduced himself to the king of Bithynia, Nicomedes, and Caesar was so well received that he soon found himself in charge of defeating the forces of the island nation of Mytilene in their attempt to brake away from Roman rule. The rebellion caused much friction and collateral damage in Bithynia, so Nicomedes was anxious to see Caesar succeed.

In the ensuing conflict, Caesar began to display a capacity for tactical genius and strategic forethought that would become the hallmarks of his rise to power. Sulla retires to private life and shortly thereafter dies just as Caesar finishes his campaign in Mytilene. This combination of events allows Caesar to return to Rome and attempt to take advantage of more ambitious opportunities.

Hints[]

~You may take the passage on either the west or east coast of Greece, but only at the docks that are friendly to you.

~ The route to Asia Minor is patrolled by Greek warships and pirate raiders, but your transport should be able to outrun them.

~Caesar has enough money to hire only one transport, but if you take ship from the western dock, it may be possible to stop at the eastern dock to get directions.

~Caesar may be able to find more people than just Minucius Thermus. With a bit of exploring, Caesar could find some powerful friends.

~Although he doesn't mention it, Nicomedes will only wait so long for you to deliver his gold. He'll remind you if you're late.

~The first opportunity you get to repay the Pirate King you should do so. Making an enemy of him could result in strategic problems and assassination attempts.

~Destruction of Mytilene's mainland Town Center will force the submission of the remaining enemy mainland buildings and citizens.

~The Standard Bearer is a spear infantry who gives a small morale units to nearby allied units. You can recruit the Standard Bearer at a barracks to improve your army's overall performance.
